Let’s take interviewing as an example. Besides showing up prepared (i.e., with a printed portfolio), one way you can demonstrate this in an interview is to ask the interviewer if there’s anything you can provide to them to help him/her make a decision. Let them give you a task that you can take home and work on. This will show them that you’re willing to invest the time, energy, and effort to prove your proactiveness. It also gives you a reason to follow up, which, in itself, is proactive. Figure out how to bring value, and you’ll stick out among the other candidates.

Few countries have escaped the grasps of pandemic outbreaks, yet many have readily forgotten the realities of these health crises. The United States had the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, yet disbanded dedicated pandemic response teams in 2018. Conversely, African countries retained the health systems used for previous pandemics.
This, of course, overlaps with proactiveness. Each character trait builds on one another. When you’re confronted with new challenges or missing skillsets, don’t complain or dwell on your lack of knowledge. Dive in and learn what you must to help the team, even if it’s not in line with your core capabilities. This is especially easy nowadays with online courses, articles, and videos.

To be clear, I don’t disagree with Dave here. Not that it would mean anything if I did. I don’t know anything about Dave Chappelle or contract law or about having an iconic, world-renowned TV show that bears my name. Neither do any of us.
Nothing about money was consistent when I was a child. So when my grandmother gave us an allowance for two or three months, I took my purchasing power seriously. Grandma was living with my mother for a bit, as she did from time to time, and every Friday, just after depositing her check, she would give me a ten dollar bill or two fives, then do the same for my brother and sister. What my brother spent his cash on shifted from week to week, but I kept the same route and bought the same items.
What I do know, is that Dave Chappelle is worth an estimated $50 million, and yet he persuaded a crowd of ordinary people, who paid their hard-earned money to see him, that they should refuse to watch his show unless he gets paid more than his contract told him he would. He sat on stage and told the story of a multi-million dollar deal, that made him fewer millions than he hoped, and managed not to sound like an asshole.
If you’re a candidate looking for work, keep your interactions friendly but always professional. Understand the cultures and norms of the people and teams you interact with. It’s important to note that respect goes both ways. It’s a shared human trait that helps build friendships and great working relationships.
You have to be inquisitive and have the type of personality that enjoys seeking out answers. Do you have the drive to learn new things? Do you take it upon yourself to figure things out and learn new skillsets?
Having respect for others goes without saying, but again, actions speak louder than words. Out of the three traits, this may be the easiest to spot in an interview. Do the candidates show up on time? Are they respectful and professional in email exchanges, etc.?
I’m not proposing that you simply throw your desire to perform UX work out the window. What I’m saying is that you have to have the flexibility and aptitude to learn and accomplish what must be tackled to get the work done and support the team. This leads to my final trait, respect.
Let me give you a simple example. I once hired a UX designer for a specific mobile redesign effort. During the first week of the project, the scope changed and I needed support to document requirements, not design. The designer we had just hired didn’t have much experience in gathering functional requirements or managing them. So, what did she do? She rolled up her sleeves and read articles, talked to business analysts, and figured out the basics on her own. She didn’t complain. She dug in and figured it out. This type of attitude will set you apart from everyone else.
